Last week, my boyfriend and I decided to have a nice date day in Philly. We first went to The Academy of Natural Sciences and then to the Magic Gardens. This post will be in two parts and the Magic Gardens will be first because I have way too many pictures from the museum that still need to be edited.
The Philadelphia Magic Gardens is a beautiful nonprofit art museum and gallery on South Street that was created by Isaiah Zagar to help beautify the neighborhood. When he moved to Philly with his wife, Julia, the couple teamed up with other artist and activists and transformed the neighborhood into a prosperous art haven and helped to stop the creation of a highway that would have eliminated South Street. Zagar and his wife added beautiful, colorful mosaics on public and private walls throughout the neighborhood. Its truly a beautiful site and I hope some of you who read this will get to visit this magical place. The history of this lace goes on and on and just gets more amazing as you read it. If you'd like to read more about it and get information about visiting it, click here.
I have been to the Magic Gardens twice and each time is better than the last because you are able to focus more and see different items used in the art that you didn't notice before. When you look around after the initial shock of how beautiful and amazing this place is, you'll notice little statues placed through out that are really interesting and unique. You'll see images of fruit that used to make up a set of plates scattered throughout the walls, you'll see glass bottles in all different colors, beautifully colored mugs line the tops on the walls that separate the walk ways, and there are so many interesting sentences placed on the walls using tiles with letters on them. My favorite spot is toward the street, using blue tiles the word "llamas" is randomly spelled out and place along the walkway.
If you ever visit the Philly area and you love art or unique things, be sure to visit the Magic Garden. The neighborhood is filled with bright images and shining tiles, so be sure to take a walk outside of the Gardens as well. The art in Philly is never ending, there are so many amazing places to see.
