While thinking of Disney related ideas for my blog, I came up with the idea to do Disney movies vs. the original stories the movies ar based on. Not really an original idea but i thought it would be a fun weekly series.
Honestly, Sleeping Beauty should not be a Disney story once you find out about the origins and what happens in the real story. I had already heard of this story so I wasn't too shocked when I finally sat down to read it but it is pretty interesting to see how Disney twisted the story to make it suitable for children. Sleeping Beauty is one of my absolute favorites so I, of course, had to start with this story. There will be one post a week featuring some popular stories. I'm sure everyone already knows all of them but I thought it would be a fun series to throw into my blog.
Let's start off talking about the Disney version. I'm sure everyone knows the story but here we go anyway. Once upon a time there was a princess born to a king and queen. When she was born, everyone gathered to exchange gifts. During the nights events, an evil queen, named Maleficent, arrived and cursed the child. On her 16th birthday, she was cursed to fall into a deep sleep and only true loves kiss could wake her. Her parents do everything in their power to save her from her fate, but unfortunately, they can't stop it from happening. She falls asleep and its left up to a young prince to save her. He battles with Maleficent, who transforms into a dragon, and defeats her. He is able to rescue the princess and save the kingdom, and they all live happily ever after.
Now, the real story, which was written by Giambattista Basile and is titled The Sun, The Moon, And Talia, is not so pleasant. This story doesn't have true loves kiss to break the spell, instead she is raped, but I'll get to that in a moment. This story begins with a princess being born to a Lord. He called for wise men and astrologers to consult to gather and cast her horoscope. They told the Lord she was to be put in great danger by a splinter pf flax. To keep that from happening, he did not allow any flax in the palace and got rid of what was already there. When Talia grew up, she got a splinter of flax under her fingernail and dropped "dead". The lord was so devastated he had her body laid out in her finest outfit and laid on a brocade-covered dais. He later abandoned the estate that her body was in. During a hunt, a king came across her body and desired her so strongly, that he raped her. What he did not know was she had gotten pregnant. He left without knowing and forgot about her for a while. Talia had twins, a boy and a girl. She named them Sun and Moon. Fairies had attended the birth and helped to care for the babies. By mistake, the boy sucked on his moms finger and was able to remove the splinter. When she awoke, she was confused but came to love the babies. The king returned to find the children, he fell in love with Talia and the babies. Unfortunately, he was already married and the queen was not pleased about this. She tricked Talia into sending the babies to her. Upon arrival, the queen ordered the chef to kill the babies and cook them into meals for trhe king. The chef agreed but killed two lambs instead and sent the babies to his wife. The king unknowingly ate the prepared food, which the queen though contained the babies. She then called for Talia to come to her and ordered Talia to be thrown in the fire. The king arrived before Talia was killed and asked for an explanation. Once, he was given the explanation, he ordered the queen and everyone who helped her to be thrown in the fire intended for Talia. The chef told the king he'd saved the babies and was rewarded once the king was reunited with them and Talia. They got married and lived happily ever after.
Okay, so now that its all laid out in front of you, can you believe this story was able to be changed so drastically into the story we all know and love today? Pretty grim things happened but in the end, I guess everything turned out okay for the king and Talia. I have 16 parts to this series, so be sure to check back next Friday to read about Snow White. I really hope you enjoyed reading about and learning about the differences in the Disney version and the real story. See you next week.
